Development Trends

The development trends of protected areas in peninsular Malaysia (Fig. 12.1) can be divided into the colonial period and the national period. The colonial period refers to the era when the country was governed by the British whereas the national period is after the country received independence in 1957. The purpose of dividing into two periods is to compare the trend and efforts taken in development of protected areas between the two periods.
