Planning Site

The planning site is Megurizaka pond, Yomiya City park, Kitakyushu City in Japan. The planning site is surrounded by a residential area. At this study site, habitat fragmentation has already been caused by the development of housing projects. If we create a green space such as an urban forest in an urban area (Fig. 5.1), it will serve as a stepping stone for species dispersal (Forman 1995). There are, however, still a number of streams, ponds and other green spaces remaining within a radius of 5 km of the planning site (Fig. 5.2) and the situation before renewal design

(Fig. 5.3). This area of the city has been developed mainly as a residential area with about 63 % of its original green spaces (forests and grassland) having been lost over the past 70 years (Fig. 5.1). Some ponds and lotus flowers have been planted, and the light of the festival was reflected on the pond in Fig. 5.4.
