T

he major components of the Queen Anne secretary are shown in exploded form in this section. The most elaborate part—the desk unit (page 106)—is essentially a carcase with drawers, a fall – front and an opening for the pigeonhole unit. All the corner joints for the carcase, the bookcase, and the drawers are dovetailed. The drawers are supported by dust frames attached to the sides. To allow for wood movement as a result of changes in
humidity, the frames are glued to the sides only near the front; screws driven through elongated holes reinforce this connection. The fall-front is fixed to the unit with butt hinges. To ease the strain on the hinges when the fall-front is let down, a pair of boards, called lopers, slide out to provide support.

The bookcase (below) is another solid-panel carcase with shelves, a back panel, and crown molding. The shelves are
fully adjustable; they sit on pins that can be inserted at any height in the sides. The glass doors that grace the bookcase and protect its contents are hinged to the side panels.

The pigeonhole unit (page 108) is a smaller carcase with three drawers and a series of vertical dividers. The unit rests atop the drawer section of the desk, with strips of molding concealing the gap between the two.
